Women’s Services Growing with Our Region’s Families

Growing families have shared the joy of their new arrivals with Sacred Heart staff since the hospital’s earliest days. Sacred Heart welcomed its first baby, Janice Gundersheimer, into the world on Sept. 7, 1915. Dr. William Dewberry attended the birth, and Janice and her mother left the hospital 11 days later with a bill of only $47.57. Sacred Heart has been caring for women and meeting their healthcare needs since then, including delivering all eight of Janice's children.

Today, Sacred Heart Women’s Hospital, is the only Women’s Hospital in Northwest Florida. More of our region’s babies are born at Sacred Heart than any hospital in Northwest Florida. And just in case, our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is staffed with highly skilled physicians and nurses who provide lifesaving care for babies who are sick or premature.

In 2002, three sets of quadruplets were born at Sacred Heart Women's Hospital to the Dorr, Helms, and Dietrich families.

“While the birth of a child is the reason so many women come to Sacred Heart, we’ve designed our facilities with all of women's health needs in mind,” says Pippa Nicholson-Kuenn, administrative director of Women’s and Cancer services. “Throughout our campus, and throughout our region, we’ve combined a wide variety of medical specialists with convenient, comprehensive healthcare services delivered in beautiful, patient-friendly environments,” she adds.

From the Ann L. Baroco Center for Women's Health which provides on-site breast cancer screenings, evaluation and counseling, to our new Institute for Surgical Weight Loss , Sacred Heart Women's Hospital provides care for all stages and needs of a woman's life. Our highly specialized physicians diagnose and treat cancers of special concern to women, and provide women’s heart and vascular care with the latest diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation services available. Comprehensive orthopedic services, including aggressive care for joint replacement patients, also can be found at Sacred Heart.
