Most
Recent Decade of Enhancement & Expansion
The
90-year history of Sacred Heart as told on the preceding pages
is one filled with inspiration, growth and an unending commitment
of service to those most in need. Thanks to visionary leadership
over the past decade, our commitment has resulted in an unparalleled
time of regional growth and expansion. Here are just a few more
of the highlights:
State-of-the-Heart
Cardiac Care
Since
performing the area’s first open heart surgery in 1972,
Sacred Heart remains the region’s cardiac care leader, allowing
patients to obtain quality heart care services close to home.
Opened
in 2000, Sacred Heart’s Regional Heart and Vascular Institute
combines renowned physicians and technical support staff with
the latest diagnostic, treatment, and surgical services. We provide
the latest treatments for coronary artery disease, heart failure,
heart rhythm disorders and a variety of vascular or circulatory
problems. For more information, visit www.sacred-heart.org.
Emergency Care When it Matters
When
Sacred Heart opened its Emergency Room in 1959 at its original
site on 12th Avenue, the hospital served 500 emergency patients
in its first three weeks of operation.
The
new 24-hour Regional Emergency/Trauma Center which opened in 2000
treats more than 70,000 patients a year. In 2001 we opened our
expanded 10-bed Chest Pain Center in the ED. Sacred Heart also
offers the area’s only Trauma Center equipped and staffed
to treat both adults and children.
When Stroke Strikes
Sacred
Heart’s Regional Stroke Center, which opened in the summer
of 2005, features a specialized stroke intervention team at the
ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our team’s leader
is a neurologist with special training in the very latest techniques
to restore blood flow to the brain.

Shaping
New Lives
Sacred
Heart Institute for Surgical Weight Loss, which opened in the
fall of 2005, is a new service to help people who are clinically
obese achieve significant weight loss safely through minimally
invasive surgery. Dedicated to the highest level of patient safety,
the program includes comprehensive physical and psychological
evaluations, the safest surgical techniques available for weight-loss
surgery today, care in a specially designed inpatient bariatrics
unit, nutrition therapy, a support group, and a five-year follow-up
program. The program, under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Lord,
a fellowship-trained bariatrics surgeon, includes an extensive
team of professionals, including a few former bariatrics surgery
patients who bring their personal experience and perspectives
to their roles with our patients.
