Isla Smith, Pensacola resident and graduate of St. Joseph’s
Academy in Emmitsburg, Md. requests the Daughters of
Charity to come to Pensacola.
1914
In August, a groundbreaking is held for construction
of "Pensacola Hospital".
1915
Opened a 135-bed "Pensacola Hospital" with
the first patient admitted Aug.31. The hospital formally
opened on Sept. 1 and the School of Nursing opened on
September 11.
1918
Worldwide flu epidemic hits Pensacola. So many patients
arrive that some sleep in the halls.
1933
The hospital opens a maternity ward
1936
A bill from Pensacola Hospital shows "hospital
room and care" was $6 per day.
1948
Changed name of hospital from "Pensacola Hospital"
to Sacred Heart Hospital
1959
Sacred Heart announces plans to build a new hospital
to be relocated on Ninth
Avenue, on 25 acres near Pensacola Junior College.
1964
The Daughters of Charity change their habit for the
first time in 114 years, eliminating
the familiar headpiece, the cornette.
1965
The “new” Sacred Heart Hospital, a 250 bed
hospital, opens at its present site at 5151 N. Ninth
Avenue.
1969
Sacred Heart Children's Hospital opens in a former nursing
school building converted to the area’s first
hospital dedicated solely to children’s care.
1970
Opening of a 26 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
and the first heart catheterization performed
1971
Initiated infant transport van services to patients
in northwest Florida and southeast Alabama.
1972
First open heart surgery in Northwest Florida performed
at Sacred Heart by Dr. John Wimberly
1975
SHH acquires the first CT scanner in Northwest Florida
and the region’s first clinic for management of
high risk pregnancies opens
1981
$22 million expansion begins, to include new wings and
36 beds added for the new fifth floor. Lab and radiology
departments expand. First balloon angioplasty performed
at SHH
1984
Regional Pediatric Critical Care Unit opens; Sacred
Heart extends into Santa Rosa County with opening of
Tiger Point Family Care Center.
1986
The Ann Baroco Center for Women's Health opens.
1987
Established Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services.
Relocated and expanded the hospital's gastroenterology
services
1989
Mission in Motion, a customized mobile health bus, is
established to provide free health screening services
to the elderly and the poor.
1990
First gallbladder removal surgery via laparoscopy
is performed in Northwest Florida. Held groundbreaking
ceremony on August 31, 1990 for multi-year expansion
program on the same date we celebrated our 75th anniversary.Dr.
Dewey Torres performed the region's first gallbladder
removal surgery via lasaroscopy;
the first procedure performed using this innovative
technique in northwest Florida.
1992
Major
campus expansion completed with the opening of the James
H. Baroco Center for Cancer Care, the new Ann L.
Baroco Center for Women’s Health, a new MRI facility,
the Center for Diagnostic Services, and a new heart
catheterization lab.
Quadruplets are born at Sacred Heart Hospital, the first
quadruplets in the hospital's history.
1993
Drs. Fleischhauer, Doty and Rogers implant first coronary
stent, a first in Northwest Florida.
1994
Outpatient
Surgical Center opens.
1995
Quintuplets are born at Sacred Heart Hospital; the hospital
acquires new bone
density scanner for early detection of osteoporosis.
1996
The new Sacred Heart Women’s
and Children's
Hospital opens and Sacred Heart performs the region’s
first minimally invasive coronary bypass surgery.
1997
Sacred
Heart Children’s Hospital opens a Pediatric
Dental Clinic for children from low-income families
who lack access to regular dental care.
1998
Sacred
Heart Home Care becomes a fully operational home
health agency.
1999
SHH opens a Pulmonary
Rehabilitation Program and opens a new inpatient
rehabilitation unit
2000
SHH expands its campus again, opening a new Emergency/Trauma
Center and new surgery facilities.
2001
New AIRHeart
air ambulance service based in Walton County begins
operation, and Sacred Heart opens the new Haven of Our
Lady of Peace nursing home in partnership with Methodist
Homes for the Aging.
2002
Laboratory installs Northwest Florida’s first
automated, robotic laboratory system to make lab testing
faster, more cost effective. Sacred
Heart Emergency Department. opens a new Pediatric
Emergency Dept. wing with a 9-bed unit.
2003
Sacred
Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast opens its new
50-bed hospital east of Destin
2004
Opening of a new Regional
Joint Replacement Center providing comprehensive
care for patients who need knee or hip replacement surgery.
Sacred Heart’s Cancer Center adds Intensity Modulated
Radiation Therapy (IMRT), the latest advance in more
precise, more targeted radiation therapy for cancer.
2005
Opening of Sacred
Heart Medical Park on Airport Boulevard, a four-story
building for outpatient diagnostic services, physician
offices, hyperbaric
medicine/wound care and other outpatient services
opens

Heart launches new Regional
Stroke Center headed by Dr. Rodney Soto
