Expect the Best in Physical Therapy Services

Physical therapy is a crucial part of many rehabilitation programs. A physical therapist will plan exercises to help you retrain your muscles and adjust the way you need to.

At Sacred Heart Health System, our physical therapy team is dedicated to restoring patients to good health by helping them return to a normal lifestyle as quickly and painlessly as possible. Beyond the prescribed treatment, our focus is on patient education to help our patients improve and maintain their own health. At Sacred Heart, physical therapy services are divided into two main areas – inpatient and outpatient.

For more information on the various physical therapy services provided in these areas, please click on them in the menu box.

Who Can Benefit From Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy (PT) is an important part of the recovery from joint replacement surgery. Exercises are done, often almost right after the surgery, to regain motion and strength in the affect joint.

Some other conditions that also benefit from PT include:
• Accident injuries
• Low-back pain
• Arthritis
• Heart disease
• Head injuries
• Cerebral palsy
• Fractures

PT is also often part of recovery from orthopedic issues including sprains and strains, bursitis and tendinitis, injuries to the knee, shoulder, hips, feet, legs and ankles. PT may also benefit patients with chronic conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis, osteonecrosis and post-polio syndrome.

What Does a Physical Therapist Do?
The role of a physical therapist is to help the patient restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities for people that are suffering from injuries or disease.

Our physical therapists will work with both you and your doctor to design and implement a therapy plan based on your own unique needs. To develop this plan, they will review your medical history and then have you perform a series of tests to measure your strength, range of motion, balance and coordination, posture, muscle performance, respiration, and motor function.

Once your therapy plan has been created, our physical therapists will help you learn to perform the appropriate exercises and will guide you through your treatment. They can also help you learn how to use things such as crutches, prostheses and wheelchairs. They also may show you how to do exercises at home to speed up your recovery.

What Types of Treatments Can I Expect in Physical Therapy?
At Sacred Heart, physical therapy treatments often include exercises for flexibility, strength, and/or endurance. In most cases, our therapists will encourage you to use your own muscles to increase your flexibility and range of motion before moving on to other exercises that will help improve your strength, balance, coordination, and endurance.

In addition to these exercises, our therapists also use electrical stimulation, hot packs or cold compresses, and ultrasound devices to help relieve your pain and reduce swelling. They may also use traction or deep-tissue massage to relieve pain.
