Most pregnancies and deliveries go as planned, with few complications and mother and baby going home within two days. But sometimes, the unexpected happens. When it does, Sacred Heart Hospital is ready, offering experienced, life-saving care for women who are at risk for complications during pregnancy, for premature and sick newborns, and for unborn children who are not developing correctly.
Sacred Heart is the Regional Perinatal Center – one of only 11 in the state – and Northwest Florida’s only center designed for women with high-risk pregnancies. For women requiring an extended hospital stay, our high-risk pregnancy unit at Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola strives to provide a comfortable, soothing experience in the weeks leading up to your delivery, with activities such as a social hour when patients can meet other moms-to-be and share your experiences together.
Our physicians also offer outpatient consultations and counseling for high-risk conditions such as premature labor, multiple gestations, hypertension, hemolytic/Rh disease, genetic disorders, diabetes and infectious diseases.
Caring for the Unexpected: OB Emergency Care Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
In an emergency situation, time can be critical to the health of both mother and baby, so a mom’s immediate access to care is important. As the only local hospital where an obstetrician is onsite 24/7, Sacred Heart offers an emergency care center especially dedicated to treating unexpected issues in pregnant women. This ensures that women who are in labor or who are experiencing complications are seen right away by an in-house board-certified OB/GYN who can provide care until your OB/GYN is able to arrive at the hospital.
Sacred Heart Hospital also offers the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) , the highest level of care available for infants who are born premature or critically ill. Should complications occur during your delivery, take comfort in the fact that just moments away is one of Sacred Heart’s neonatologists – a physician specially trained to care for our smallest patients. This physician specialist can be summoned to your baby’s side immediately, day or night.
More than likely, you won’t need some of these services, but you will have the peace of mind knowing that they’re here for you when you need them most.
Find a Doctor Specializing in High-Risk Pregnancy
Perinatologists are specialists board-certified in maternal-fetal medicine and with extensive experience in the management of high-risk pregnancies. Our physicians can see patients:
- For a one-time consultation and/or ultrasound
- For co-management of your pregnancy, along with your referring OB/GYN
- For transfer when desired by your referring OB/GYN
If you are referred to one of our maternal-fetal medicine physicians, you will continue to remain a patient of your original, referring OB physician, who will also deliver your baby. High-risk pregnancy specialists typically see you for two or three appointments and send very detailed recommendations to your referring OB/GYN to implement.

Our physicians specializing in high-risk pregnancy (maternal-fetal medicine) operate a series of satellite offices across Northwest Florida and South Alabama, offering outpatient consultations, as well as genetic and preconception counseling.
Because our staff travels to our outreach clinics throughout the week, we see patients in each area only on certain days and times.
