In an emergency situation, time can be critical to the health of both mother and baby, so a mom's immediate access to care is important.
Sacred Heart is the only local hospital where an obstetrician is onsite 24/7, so we offer an emergency room especially dedicated to treating unexpected issues in pregnant women.
How It Works
This service ensures that women who are in labor or who are experiencing complications are seen right away by an in-house, board-certified OB/GYN, who can provide care until the patient's own doctor arrives at the hospital.
The OB/GYN hospitalists don't take the place of the patient's personal physician, but they work with OB/GYNs in our community to provide a safety net for situations when the baby can't wait.
By providing a faster and more specialized response through our OB Emergency Care Center, Sacred Heart Hospital enhances the safety and health outcomes for both mother and baby.
Only at Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart is the only hospital in the region to provide an around-the-clock OB emergency service. Historically, the vast majority of hospitals have not had an OB/GYN on site 24/7. Instead, the standard of care has been that pregnant women in emergency situations are treated either by an emergency room physician (in the first half of their pregnancy) or by a nurse in the labor-and-delivery unit (for the second half of their pregnancy). This nurse would then make a phone call to the patient's OB/GYN to discuss the problem and the best course of action.
Sacred Heart Hospital has partnered with OB Hospitalist Group - the nation's largest provider of its kind - to provide this service and enhance safety for our maternity patients.
Each mom who visits the OB Emergency Care Center is seen by an in-house, board-certified OB/GYN called an OB/GYN hospitalist.
Because Sacred Heart is a teaching hospital, our OB/GYN hospitalists also oversee our OB/GYN resident physicians.
Residents have completed medical school, are licensed to practice medicine and are training to become specialists in obstetrics and gynecology. All residents are closely supervised by and work alongside experienced physicians, called the attending physician - in this case, the OB/GYN hospitalist.
As Northwest Florida's only OB/GYN residency program, Sacred Heart stays on the leading edge of women's health research. Academic Medical Centers - like Sacred Heart - have been shown in studies to have better patient outcomes for both routine and complex problems.
