Sacred Heart Regional Stroke Center is dedicated to saving lives and reducing the damaging effects of stroke.

We are proud to be rated among the top 10 percent of stroke programs in the nation, which means better outcomes for our patients. Our targeted, quality program of care is designed to reduce the number of deaths related to stroke, minimize disability, create awareness of prevention, and help reduce the cost of health care.

Based in the Emergency/Trauma Center at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, the Regional Stroke Center is under the direction of Dr. Terry Neill, a highly skilled board-certified critical care neurologist.

The Sacred Heart Regional Stroke Center provides:

  • Rapid assessment of patients with stroke symptoms
  • On-site CT scanner in Sacred Heartís Emergency/Trauma Center
  • Aggressive treatment using the very latest therapies and procedures to remove blood clots and blockages inside the neck and head
  • Comprehensive care throughout hospitalization, including the services of an Adult Critical Care Unit
  • Nurses with neurological expertise or special training in stroke care
  • Long-term follow up via a vascular neurology clinic for stroke prevention
  • Community education

An Award-Winning Program

Sacred Heart Hospital was the first hospital in the Pensacola area to earn Primary Stroke Center Certification from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The Joint Commissionís certification and its award of the Gold Seal of Approval to Sacred Heartís Regional Stroke Center means the center complies with the highest national standards for safety and quality of stroke care.

Other recognition came in May 2012 and May 2013 when Sacred Heart was awarded the Gold Plus Achievement Award by the American Heart Association for our commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients, according to evidence-based guidelines.

A Blueprint for Successful Stroke Intervention

By using consistent treatment plans and protocols, state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, and the very latest treatments for stroke, Sacred Heart Regional Stroke Center aims to provide faster, more effective care that will improve outcomes and reduce death and disability from stroke. Patients treated in the Regional Stroke Center are more likely to go home following hospitalization instead of being admitted to an extended-care facility or nursing home.

Restoring Life and Reducing Costs

The United States spends more than $50 billion a year for care related to stroke. Floridaís Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) has recommended that stroke patients be admitted to a hospital that houses a certified stroke center, because the care is more consistent and patients experience better outcomes, which helps reduce the cost of care.

Use Your Head When It Comes to Stroke

Strokes are the third-leading cause of death and the number one cause of long-term disability in adults in the U.S.

Stroke is considered the “heart attack of the brain. Just as a heart attack does damage by reducing blood flow to the heart, stroke causes injury by affecting blood flow to the brain.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries blood and oxygen to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, time lost is brain lost. When a stroke occurs, it is critical to evaluate the patient immediately and provide treatment quickly.
