Advances in Cancer Detection:
Positron Emission Tomography
Sacred Heart Hospital was the first hospital in Northwest Florida to provide an advanced imaging technology - positron emission tomography - that can diagnose cancer at an earlier stage.
Where other imaging techniques can show pictures of what an organ looks like, PET imaging allows radiologists to measure metabolism and produce a picture of how well an organ is functioning. The scan can pick up evidence of changes in cell activity caused by cancer long before the tumor can be seen by other imaging techniques." PET/CT Fusion Scanner
In 2005, Sacred Heart instatlled a new state-of-the-art PET/CT Scanner that combines the best features of two separate imaging technologies. This scanner utilizes LSO crystal technology, allowing for the fastest scanning capabilities in the Southeast.
Fusion PET/CT images are analyzed by Dr. Frank Abbott, a board certified radiologist who also completed a two-year Nuclear Medicine Fellowship at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville.
Breast Cancer Services
The Ann L. Baroco Center for Breast Health is a free-standing facility dedicated to breast imaging and early detection of breast cancer. The Center uses a combination of some of the most advanced education, diagnosis and treatment services available. From support groups and state-of-the-art imaging to the latest biopsy techniques and treatments, patients receive the very best of care.
