Pediatric Emergency Department

When an emergency strikes, Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart is prepared for the unexpected.

At Children's Hospital, we have a 12-bed area designated for children in an area separate from our adult ER. We are proud to serve as the region’s only treatment facility for pediatric trauma, with specially trained transport teams for bringing critically ill patients to Children's Hospital from areas outside Pensacola. In fact, we are designated by the state as Northwest Florida's only Pediatric Trauma Referral Center.

Best of all – all of our patients receive care from team members who specialize in caring for children, using equipment that is specially designed for a child’s smaller anatomy.

A Place Just For Kids

At Children's, we understand that children are not just small adults and have vastly different medical needs. We have the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment to care for infants as small as 6 pounds to adolescents up to 18 years of age — and any severity of illness. All rooms contain pediatric-specific resuscitation technology and a non-invasive digital computer that monitors the patient's heart and respiratory system.

If your child requires lab tests or X-rays, we do it within the immediate vicinity of the ER to minimize any waiting time. Unlike many other emergency departments, we also have the capabilities to perform complex procedures and treat complex pediatric emergencies, as well as common childhood illnesses and injuries.

Designed with Children in Mind

We understand that taking your child to the emergency room is stressful. That’s why we have gone to great lengths to make our facilities as child-friendly as possible, with a separate waiting area just for kids and their parents. We also have 12 private, dedicated pediatric exam and treatment rooms that are bright and child-friendly.

Here When You Need Us Most

At Children's, families and children know there is always someone available to see them, day or night.

Our pediatric trauma referral center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to care for the most critically ill and injured children.

In addition, our Pediatric Emergency Room is staffed with our team of pediatric emergency physicians who specialize in the acute care of infants and children. They are on-duty daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and from 11 a.m to 11 p.m. on weekends - the peak hours of children’s emergency situations. Because an emergency room visit can be an anxious time, all children are seen as quickly as possible to alleviate any potential stress.

Who We Care For

At Sacred Heart, we treat 75 to 100 infants and adolescents every day and approximately 26,000 each year.

Our team and facility are equipped to handle a wide range of medical problems, including:

  • Acute traumatic injuries
  • Dental Injuries
  • Asthma
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Cancer
  • Hemophilia
  • AIDS
  • Seizures
  • Critical illnesses
  • Colds and flu
  • Acute gastroenteritis
  • Croup and bronchiolitis
  • Complex fractures and lacerations
  • Abcess drainage

Children who require additional care can be admitted to our Children’s Hospital, just down the hall from our emergency department. Sacred Heart provides high-level care in most pediatric specialties, but, if your child should require more complex, specialized treatment, our neonatal and pediatric tranport team can transfer your child safely to a higher level of care.

The Pediatric Emergency Room is located not inside The Children's Hospital, but adjacent to the adult Emergency Room & Trauma Center on the Sacred Heart Pensacola Campus. Please follow the signs to the Emergency Room, and park in the lot adjacent to the building.

Neonatal and Pediatric Transportation

From life-threatening illnesses to serious injuries, specially trained transport teams bring critically ill patients to Children’s Hospital from many communities and rural areas beyond Pensacola. Our specialized transport team utilizes the services of our state-of-the-art Neonatal and Pediatric Transport Ambulance, as well as AIRHeart, Sacred Heart’s air ambulance service.

Our Team

Our emergency/ trauma department has an incredible multidisciplinary pediatric emergency team who is very comfortable and familiar with dealing with children. Our team is made up of surgeons, physicians, nurses, social workers and rehabilitation therapists who have additional training and expertise in caring for children.

We understand that children need special treatment not only for their physical differences, but for their mental differences as well. They react to pain quite differently than adults. Having a team who understands these differences is crucial to proper care, especially in a stressful situation, such as a visit to the emergency department.

What to Expect

When you arrive at Sacred Heart, you will need to check in at the front desk, located inside the Sacred Heart Regional Heart and Vascular Center. Once there, your child will be evaluated in triage, where a highly skilled nurse evaluates patients, reviews any history of prior visits, collects important contact information, and assesses the severity of the illness or problem so that each patient is seen in a timely fashion.

Children who have trouble breathing or experience serious trauma are seen by a specialized team that assembles to address their immediate care. These experts include pediatric emergency medicine physicians and nurses, respiratory therapists, sub-specialty physicians, and some resident physicians.

To make the experience more pleasant, each patient room is brightly decorated, so children feel as calm and comfortable as possible.

What to Bring With You

To make sure your trip to Emergency/Trauma Center is as quick and easy as possible, parents are asked to bring the following items with them:

• Your child's immunization history
• Your child's primary physician's phone number
• Information about any chronic illness or condition your child may have
• X-rays or lab test results from other hospitals or clinics relating to the child's current illness (if available)
