Helen Mathis
Hi, I'm Helen R. Mathis, RN, BSN. Retired from Sacred Heart Women's and Children's in 2005 after 35 1/2 years of service. Former coordinator on Infant/ Toddlers unit.
Some of my favorite memories are:
1. Hauling ice in that little red wagon from the main hospital through the tunnel to fill our croup tents on the unit. The ice melted fast back in those days. It was very nice when the hospital purchased tents that needed no ice for cooling.
2. The purchase of prepackage alcohol swabs was better than pouring alcohol onto a cotton ball and using it.
3. Itravenous bags hanging from a pole, and counting IV drops, believe it or not but, there were less infiltration, because there were no machines to beep when the bag was empty or alert you to any signs of trouble at the site. If the patient changed position, the drip would speed up or down, and sometimes would stop altogheter.
Thanks,
Helen R. Mathis, RN, BSN
