What is RSS?
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an XML-based format for content distribution and sharing content such as news headlines. RSS feeds usually include headlines with links back to the publishing site for the full story.

How do Web sites use RSS?
Many Web sites currently offer RSS feeds which allows their readers to be up-to-date without requiring them to subscribe to e-mail newsletters or expect them to visit throughout the day. RSS feeds are updated constantly and are automatically sent out to the readers preferred way of receiving the feed.

How can I receive RSS feeds?

The Simple Way
There are several ways to receive RSS feeds. One of the easier ways is to have an online homepage or portal site that allows you add headlines to their site such as MyYahoo! or Google. (See the instructions on the right for more information).

The Browser Way
Some browsers like Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7)and Mozilla's FireFox have built-in RSS feed readers. Please note that only IE 7 has RSS support. IE 6 and below does not support direct RSS reading.

With either IE 7 or FireFox, a "Live Bookmark" (this icon ) will appear at the right side of the Location or Address Bar to indicate it has detected the feed.

FireFox Instructions
To have Firefox collect the Sacred Heart RSS Feed, left-click the icon. This will bring up the familiar "Add Bookmarks" dialogue. Select "OK", and you will see the Live Bookmark displayed in your Bookmarks menu. Under this entry all of the articles for that site will be displayed.

Internet Explorer 7 Instructions (Not for IE 6)
When you visit www.Sacred-Heart.org, Internet Explorer 7 will notify you that our site offers RSS by illuminating (in red or orange) the RSS feed button on your toolbar. Click the red/orange "Feeds" button and subscribe by clicking "Subscribe to this feed" in the upper part of the screen.

The News Reader / Aggregator Way
There are software applications called 'news readers' or 'aggregators' that can collect and display RSS feeds. Many of these programs are available for you to download, many at no cost.

They vary slightly in how they look and act, so you may find yourself testing several before settling on one. Google lists a number of news aggregators (none of which are endorsed or associated with Sacred Heart Health System) that you can download and test in this list of news aggregators.
