“I Thought I Had Heard My Last Hound Dog Bark!” Jerry Darby with dogs.

When 61-year-old DeFuniak Springs resident Jerry Darby arrived at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola with severe chest pain, he wasn’t sure what was going to happen. An avid fisherman and hunter who raises hunting dogs, Jerry says, “I thought I had heard my last hound dog bark.”

Through a diagnostic heart catherization, Dr. Rohit Amin, an interventional cardiologist with Sacred Heart Cardiology, determined that Jerry’s heart was essentially functioning on only one-and-a-half arteries. “We immediately discussed his options: open heart surgery, a minimally invasive technique using stenting to open the artery, or medication,” says Dr. Amin. “Since surgery was too risky, we chose stenting.”

“I would’ve never made it if I didn’t listen to Dr. Amin’s advice,” says Jerry. His son, Jeff, adds, “Once he showed us the picture of his last open artery, it was a no-brainer. They say a picture is worth a thousand words – and that one really brought it home.”

Dr. Amin, with assistance from his partner, Dr. Mark Grise, used the Impella heart pump to temporarily aid the heart in pumping blood while they performed the entire procedure through his right wrist. A day-and-a-half later, Jerry was discharged from the hospital.

“I feel great! Dr. Amin is the best in my book,” says Jerry. “He saved my life.”

Dr. Amin treats high-risk cardiac patients requiring interventional procedures. He is experienced with the Impella heart pump, radial (wrist) access for cardiac catherization, pre- and post-operative heart transplant care, and treating patients with chronic heart failure. He has a special interest in advanced heart failure, carotid artery disease management, pulmonary hypertension, peripheral artery disease, and coronary stenting.
