Sacred Heart Hospital is the oldest Catholic hospital in Florida. Built in 1915 in Pensacola, the hospital was a joint effort between a group of local citizens and the Daughters of Charity. The Daughters are a religious order founded in 1633 that is dedicated to care for the poor and the sick. The Daughters community was started in France by St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac.

After 50 years in its original stone structure on 12th Avenue, the hospital relocated in 1965 to a new hospital off Ninth Avenue in Pensacola, across from Cordova Mall.

Since then, Sacred Heart has continued to advance its technology and expand its services. In August of 1996, the hospital opened the new Sacred Heart Children's Hospital and the Sacred Heart Women's Hospital.

In 2000, Sacred Heart completed a trio of major expansion projects that added new wings for a Regional Heart and Vascular Institute, a new center for emergency/trauma services, surgical suites, and a new Nemours Children's Clinic. In 2001, Sacred Heart put the finishing touches on those expansions by adding new waiting rooms and renovating interior corridors and critical care units. In addition, Sacred Heart and Methodist Homes also teamed up to open the new Haven of Our Lady of Peace nursing home off Summit Boulevard in November 2001.
