Medical Education Dr. Canady is board-certified in neurological surgery and pediatric neurosurgery. She earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Ann Arbor, Mich, graduating cum laude. She completed her surgical internship at Yale University-New Haven Hospital. Dr. Canady completed her neurosurgical residency at the University of Minnesota Hospitals followed by fellowship training in pediatric neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
She is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Society of Neurological Surgeons, American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery, American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, Neurological Society of America and many others.
Medical Experience Dr. Canady was the first African-American woman in the United States to become a neurosurgeon. She is a consultant to the Food and Drug Administration and former chairman of the Neurological Devices Panel of the FDA's Medical Devices Advisory Committee. From 1985 to 2001 Dr. Canady was on the faculty of Wayne State University School of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, and was awarded an endowed chair position in 1998. She served as chief of neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Michigan from 1987 to 2001. Dr. Canady joined Sacred Heart Medical Group in 2004.
Medical Interests Dr. Canady’s special medical interests are hydrocephalus, congenital spine abnormalities, skull abnormalities and brain and spinal tumors.
