Eligibility for Gastric Bypass and Lap Band Surgery
1. Failed attempts at weight loss in a medically supervised weight-loss program that have been documented.
2. BMI greater than 40 without associated co-morbidities.
3. BMI greater than 35 with one or more of the co-morbidities.
4. Able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the principles involved with surgical options, long- and short-term risks, complications, and what is required after surgery.
5. Surgery is not recommended for those who have alcoholism, overt psychosis, excessive somatization, and major cardiopulmonary disease, which would make surgery unduly dangerous.
BMI Categories:
- Underweight = <18.5
- Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
- Overweight = 25-29.9
- Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
