Facilities and Services
Children's Hospital opened in 1969 in a former nursing school dormitory on the Sacred Heart Hospital campus. In August 1996, a new dream was realized when Sacred Heart Children's Hospital moved into its new facility. Now, regardless of ability to pay, children throughout Northwest Florida can receive the specialized medical care they need in an environment designed exclusively for them.
Children's Hospital is divided into four units, with 20 private rooms for infants and toddlers, 20 for school-age children and adolescents, and 10 beds in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive care with 46 beds.
As patients recover, they may enjoy a visit to one of three play areas. The Infant/Toddler playroom focuses on art, toys and imaginative play. The game room for older children features video games, a big screen TV, and the Starbright World computer system.
Children's Hospital recognizes that when children are hospitalized, family members want to stay with them as much as possible. Parents who choose to spend the night can enjoy sofa loungers which expand into sleepers. Family members also enjoy conveniences such as refrigerators, microwaves and coffee makers. A family resource area offers educational materials, parents lounges and a washer and dryer for family use.
Our One-Room School
An extended hospital stay for a child can disrupt their schooling and cause them to fall behind in their education. To address this problem, Children's Hospital and the Escambia County School District have designed a hospital school program to help our young patients continue their education. We have an in-house school teacher who can offer individualized programs tailored to meet the school-related needs of each child in the hospital.
Neonatal Intensive Care
Children's Hospital provides Northwest Florida's only Level III intensive care nursery. We are one of only 11 hospitals in Florida designated as a Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Center. The intensive care nursery is a 46-bed unit offering specialized care of premature and critically ill newborns, some of them weighing less than 1 pound.
The many healthy "graduates" of our intensive care nursery include quintuplets, quadruplets and many sets of triplets who began their life under the care of our skilled neonatologists and nurses. For more information, see When Your Baby's in the NICU
Children's Hospital also provides a specially equipped neonatal transport van for the transfer of sick infants from other hospitals in Northwest Florida.
Trauma Care
Sacred Heart Children's Hospital is designated by the state as Northwest Florida's only Pediatric Trauma Referral Center. The hospital serves as the area's treatment facility for pediatric trauma, and provides specially trained transport teams for bringing critically ill patients to Children's Hospital from areas outside Pensacola.
