Neurologists evaluate and treat disorders of the nervous system. The Sacred Heart Medical Group Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery offers a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to evaluating and treating neurological disorders, including disorders of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.
The Role of a Neurologist
When a person has a neurological disorder that requires frequent care, a neurologist is often the principal care provider. People with disorders such as Parkinson disease, dementia (i.e. Alzheimer's disease), seizure disorders (i.e. epilepsy), stroke or multiple sclerosis may use a neurologist as their principal doctor. A neurologist may act in a consulting role. Neurologists may recommend surgical treatment, but they are not surgeons.
