PGY1 Program Purpose: The postgraduate year one (PGY1) pharmacy residency program at Sacred Heart Hospital builds upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Key services include a 566-bed hospital in Pensacola that includes the area's only Children's Hospital. Other key services include a Regional Heart and Vascular Institute, Stroke Center, Level II Trauma Center, a Cancer Center affiliated with M. D. Anderson Cancer Network, and a large regional network of primary care and specialty doctors stretching from Foley, Ala. to Apalachicola, Fla.

In 2003, the Health System added Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast, a 76-bed community hospital in Walton County. The Studer Family Children's Hospital at Sacred Heart is a 117-bed children's hospital that offers care in a number of sub-specialties including pediatric oncology, surgery, general medicine and intensive care. It is home to the area's only Level III neonatal intensive care unit. A PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency with an emphasis in pediatrics is available.


The pharmacy department employs over thirty clinical pharmacists involved in a variety of clinical services including:

  • Adverse drug event reporting
  • Anticoagulation monitoring
  • Antimicrobial stewardship
  • Drug order entry, preparation, and distribution
  • Drug information
  • IV to PO conversion
  • Multidisciplinary rounding
  • Patient education / discharge counseling
  • Parenteral nutrition preparation & monitoring
  • Patient profile review for drug-drug & drug-food interactions, therapeutic duplications & modifications
  • Pharmacokinetic dosing and monitoring
  • Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic & Renal dose adjustment
