Pharmacy Practice Residency
CLINICAL PHARMACY SERIVCES
Sacred Heart’s pharmacy department employs approximately twenty-five clinical staff pharmacists. The services provided by the department include profile review, drug information, pharmacokinetics, and nutrition support, among many others. Automated services help support the dispensing needs of the hospital with the McKesson Robot and Med Direct systems as well as AcuDose medication cabinets.
PURPOSE STATEMENT
Completion of the Pharmacy Practice Residency program at Sacred Heart Health System will develop skills within a pharmacist to work on multidisciplinary teams and provide direct patient care to various populations comprising of adults, pediatrics and neonates. The clinical experiences at Sacred Heart cover multiple medical subspecialties including med/surg, oncology, critical care, and emergency medicine. The resident pharmacist will be able to educate healthcare personnel consisting of pharmacy students, nurses, physicians, and also patients and their families. Leadership skills will be developed throughout the residency to a point that the pharmacist will have the ability to offer supervision of staff and oversight of projects. The pharmacist will ultimately be able to demonstrate medication safety procedures aimed at benefiting the patient and the department.
It is the goal of the pharmacy practice residency at Sacred Heart Health System to provide the following outcomes to any resident completing the program:
- Confidence to work in interdisciplinary groups as part of the health care team
- Competence to provide education to other health care professionals in various settings
- Leadership skills to work within any healthcare system
- Awareness and initiative to lead medication safety efforts throughout the health system
- Enhanced professionalism and marketable job skills to further a career in the practice of clinical pharmacy
