Considering Weight-Loss Surgery? Seminar Coming Up on Dec. 13
Dr. Jeffrey Lord, specialist in weight loss surgery techniques, will present “Weight Loss Surgery: Is It Right for You?” on Thursday, Dec. 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Hospital Conference Center in Pensacola. The seminar is sponsored by Sacred Heart’s Institute for Surgical Weight Loss.
Sacred Heart offers two types of weight loss surgery that use small incisions. The first is laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, which involves a permanent rerouting of the digestive system that leaves patients with a small stomach pouch. The surgery creates a bypass that reroutes food around a portion of the small intestine.
The second, newer approach performed at Sacred Heart is adjustable gastric banding. Using a laparoscope, the surgeon places an inflatable band around the stomach, creating a small upper pouch at the top, with restricted passage to the rest of the stomach. This pouch fills quickly and creates a feeling of fullness.
The only board-certified bariatric surgeon in Northwest Florida with advanced fellowship training in weight loss surgery, Dr. Lord serves as director of the Sacred Heart Institute for Surgical Weight Loss.
Dr. Lord and his staff provide comprehensive evaluation of clinically obese patients to determine their candidacy for these life-changing procedures as well as extensive patient/family education to create a foundation for a healthy lifestyle.
Reservations are required for this free seminar. To make a reservation or to obtain more information, please call (850) 416-1628 or visit http://www.sacred-heart.org/ for more information.Labels: Dr. Lord, Seminars, Weight Loss Surgery
StuderGroup Recognizes Sacred Heart on the Emerald Coast
MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – Chosen from a list of over 340 hospitals from around the United States, Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast has been named the Fire Starter of the month for December from The StuderGroup. The StuderGroup is an outcomes based health care consulting firm devoted to teaching evidence-based tools and processes that partner hospitals can use to create and sustain results. The Fire Starter award is the highest honor The StuderGroup awards to hospitals. Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald CoastSacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast is a 58-bed hospital located in Miramar Beach, Florida. Since opening its doors to patient care in January 2003, the not-for-profit hospital has grown steadily and continues to fulfill its mission to improve the health of the community at large, with special attention to service of the poor. The hospital offers a wide range of medical and surgical services, including an intensive care unit; general and specialized surgery; cardiac diagnostics; cancer care; comprehensive radiology and laboratory services; rehabilitation programs; as well as 24-hour emergency care. Comprehensive women’s services arrived in 2007 with the addition of the Olson Women’s Diagnostic Center and the Family Birth Place. What is a Fire Starter? In the earliest civilizations, Fire Starters were people who kept the flame alive. This is very important because access to fire back was essential to survival. Today’s Fire Starter reflects passion and commitment to the journey of creating an environment where patients feel confident about their care, physicians enjoy practicing medicine, and employees are proud to be part of the organization. “This award is in recognition of the great start our young hospital has had, and what an honor to successfully bring on our first additional service line this fall with the Family Birth Place,” said Roger Hall, president, Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast. “This recognition, on top of the Florida Medical Quality Assurance, Inc. (FMQAI) recognition earlier this year, which placed our hospital in the top 10% nationwide for meeting quality standards, reflects the difference our associates make each day.” Our healthcare team’s efforts in improving the patient’s experience, using key words at key times, rounding for outcomes, and as always, putting the patient’s safety first, drives high quality, compassionate healthcare and service from the heart. Patients truly perceive the difference, which is evident in our patient satisfaction scores, which consistently rank well above the 90th percentile. Third Quarter Patient Satisfaction Scores (Overall Assessment): • Emergency Department: 99% • Inpatient Services: 99% • Ambulatory Surgery: 99% • Outpatient Services: 96% “Our team’s passion and commitment to providing quality care to each and every patient is truly admirable,” said Nina Jeffords, VP Patient Care/Chief Nurse Officer. “It is an honor to work with this outstanding group of healthcare providers whose healing touch blesses countless lives. Keep the fire burning!” “I cannot think of a more deserving hospital than SHHEC,” said Lucy Crouch, StuderGroup coach. “You are role models and this award spotlights you as an example for other health care leaders to follow.” ###

Weight Management: A Doctor's Advice
Dr. Anthony Huynh, DO, has provided the answers to the following questions. Dr. Huynh is an Internal Medicine physician associated with Sacred Heart Medical Group. He specializes in weight management and nutrition. Some of his patients include those who have had bariatric surgery through Sacred Heart’s Institute for Weight Loss Surgery.
"I've lost a lot of weight and I'm trying to maintain my weight. What can I do to simply maintain my weight?"
When you put yourself on a diet and exercise regimen, you will lose some weight until you reach the “plateau” point where your body resists losing more weight despite how hard you try. At this point, you may feel disappointed and give up. But the goal should be to maintain that weight and not to give up. People also tend to let themselves “off diet” during the holiday season. That’s how the weight is gained back, usually more than what was lost before.
During the maintenance phase, the key is moderation, a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Moderation means portion-controlled. When you eat, you should divide your plate into three sections, and fill them with three types of food: one section for vegetable, one for carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, etc.) and one for protein (lean meat, seafood, eggs, etc.). Don’t go for a second round if you don’t need more calories! You should avoid high-calorie beverages and drink adequate water.
Also, you should not deprive yourself totally of certain foods. For example, some people told you to avoid carbohydrates in your diet because they make you gain weight, so you stop eating chocolate cake, your favorite food. Then you develop a craving for it. Soon, you find yourself surrendered to your weakness and eating a whole chocolate cake to satisfy your craving!
A healthy lifestyle does not refer to a balanced diet alone, but also to being active, exercising more and knowing how to handle stress. Many people look to food to relieve their stress, and that’s not healthy.
"I want my children to grow up with a healthy weight. Do you have any suggestions on helping them eat healthy and manage their weight?"
We are living in a country where malnutrition is not a concern; however, the surplus of food and how we feed ourselves is a major concern. Many families have working parents, so fast food is an easy and cheap solution. Many children grow up with fast food and soda, and they don’t eat fruits or vegetables, which are healthy but unfortunately more expensive than junk food.
You should limit junk food and soda in your children’s diet and explain to them the reasons why; otherwise, they will hide junk food in their bedrooms! Many school cafeterias are taking out the junk-food vending machines as well.
When you eat healthy, your children will eat healthy with you. A home-cooked meal is usually better because you know the ingredients you are using. When you eat out, you don’t know how much salt, oil, or other ingredients they put in the dish. Buffet restaurant is another cheap solution for busy parents, but if you let yourself eat many rounds of food each time to get your money’s worth, you are taking in more calories than you need. These extra calories will be stored as fat and that is how you gain weight.
Also, shopping at the wholesale clubs will make you buy food in bulk quantities, and you tend to force yourself to finish all that food and not to waste it. Again, it’s not just about the diet but a healthy lifestyle. You should get your children doing outdoor activities, hobbies, or playing some sports, and limit their TV time and video-game time.
Dr. Huynh can be reached at the Sacred Heart Weight Management Center at (850) 416-2884. If dieting and exercising don’t seem to help you lose weight and your doctor has determined that you are clinically obese, you may wish to consider other options in order to save your health.
