Sacred Heart Provides Major Attention for Minor Emergencies
Sacred Heart Hospital of Pensacola is expanding its Emergency/Trauma Services with the opening of a new EmergiCare Center designed to reduce wait times for patients with minor injuries and illnesses. The expansion provides an additional 24 beds to the ER/Trauma Center and will bring 15 new healthcare positions to Pensacola. Patients will enter the EmergiCare Center through the hospital's Heart and Vascular Institute entrance facing Bayou Blvd. "The Emergency / Trauma service at Sacred Heart Hospital is experiencing a rate of growth which necessitates a new approach in the care of our emergency and trauma patients," said Debbie Bostic, president of Sacred Heart Hospital. Patients who come to the Emergency/Trauma Center with a minor injury, such as a sprained ankle or an illness such as the flu, are assigned a lower priority than patients with more serious, life-threatening conditions. That system will change at the new EmergiCare Center. "Our patients with minor emergencies deserve our prompt attention," said Jennifer Griffin, vice president of Perioperative and Emergency Services. "At EmergiCare, they will not be competing for attention with the most serious medical emergencies. Each patient will have the same priority and will be treated on a first-come, first-served basis." EmergiCare will treat illnesses such as colds, flu, stomachaches and sore throats; minor injuries such as cuts, burns and sprains; and other non-emergency conditions such as skin rashes, ear infections, minor wounds, animal bites and mild asthma. The new service opened this week and will be fully operational by March 31 with dedicated physicians and nursing staff to exclusively treat patients with minor emergencies. It will serve patients daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sacred Heart's emergency room visits have increased significantly in recent years. And with the recent reduction in the number of Level II trauma centers in Pensacola, Sacred Heart expects to treat an additional 50 trauma patients per month. "We recognize the need to provide fast, appropriate care for all medical emergencies," said Dr. Gary Pablo, medical director of the Emergency/Trauma Center. "We are stepping up to the plate to serve the extra volume of trauma patients that will be coming our way, while also providing excellent care for less serious medical emergencies," explained Dr. Pablo. With this planned expansion, Sacred Heart Emergency/Trauma Services will be redesigned to include four specialized areas: Level II adult and pediatric trauma center, a separate pediatric emergency center, an adult acute emergency center, and the newest addition, the Emergicare Center for minor injuries and illnesses. Sacred Heart Health System also sponsors Escambia County Community Clinic, an alternative for walk-in and primary care for poor and uninsured patients. Sacred Heart Receives American Stroke Association's Bronze Performance Achievement Award
The American Stroke Association recently awarded Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola its Get With The GuidelinesSM-Stroke (GWTG-Stroke) Bronze Performance Achievement Award at the association's International Stroke Conference 2008. The award recognizes Sacred Heart's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment and education according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. Sacred Heart's Regional Stroke Center has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. This includes always being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when appropriate. To receive the GWTG-Stroke Bronze Performance Achievement Award, Sacred Heart consistently followed the treatment guidelines in the GWTG-Stroke program for 90 days. These include aggressive use of medications like clot-busting medications and clot prevention, cholesterol reducing drugs, and smoking cessation. The 90-day evaluation period is the first in an ongoing self-evaluation by the hospital to continually reach the 85 percent compliance level needed to sustain this award. "The American Stroke Association commends Sacred Heart Hospital for its success in implementing standards of care and protocols," said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., national Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee Member and director of the acute stroke services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. "The full implementation of acute care and secondary prevention recommendations and guidelines is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of stroke patients." GWTG-Stroke uses the "teachable moment," the time soon after a patient has had a stroke, when they are most likely to listen to and follow their healthcare professionals' guidance. Studies demonstrate that patients who are taught how to manage their risk factors while still in the hospital reduce their risk of a second stroke. Through GWTG-Stroke, customized patient education materials are made available at the point of discharge, based on patients' individual risk profiles. The take-away materials are written in an easy-to-understand format and are available in English and Spanish. In addition, the GWTG Patient Management Tool provides access to up-to-date cardiovascular and stroke science at the point of care. According to the American Stroke Association, each year approximately 780,000 people suffer a stroke - 600,000 are first attacks and 180,000 are recurrent. Of stroke survivors aged 49 and older, 21 percent of men and 24 percent of women die within a year. For those aged 70 and older, the percentages are even higher. For more information on Sacred Heart's Regional Stroke Center, please call (850) 416-1600 or visit www.sacred-heart.org. ###
