Volunteers: An Essential Part of Our Health Care System
Since 1915, the volunteer spirit has supported and sustained Sacred Heart Hospital. Our volunteers derive a certain sense of pride from their service to the patients and families who seek care at our door.
Volunteers are associated with almost every facet of Sacred Heart Health System. There is a place for everyone whether you are looking for interaction with patients in our nursing units, the Children's and Women's Hospitals or our nursing home. If you prefer clerical work, many offices would love to have you. There is an on-going need for friendly, outgoing people to sit at the information desks and provide guests with a warm greeting and courteous help with directions.
Three main volunteers groups are active at Sacred Heart Hospital:
- The Mother Seton Guild was the first formal group of volunteers, founded in 1949.
- Friends of the Hospital includes volunteers such as college students, area civic organizations, clubs, the military, and other individuals.
- Volunteens are comprised of young teenage volunteers who are at least 14 years old.
A person is able to set the volunteer hours that best suits their schedule. We ask that each volunteer work a minimum of 4 hours per week but many choose to do much more than that.
The rewards for volunteering are as individual as each volunteer, and all volunteers enjoy the special benefits of serving at Sacred Heart Hospital, such as:
- A free meal in the hospital cafeteria on the days you volunteer
- Free CPR classes, free flu vaccines through the hospital's Employee Health office, and an open invitation to participate in Employee Social Program events, such as trips, picnics, socials, and much more.
The volunteer program is managed through the Volunteer Services Department, which is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Sacred Heart Hospital family of volunteers numbers close to 400, and openings are always available. We have many teen volunteers but also quite a few volunteers in their 80s! Special skills are a bonus, but all that is really needed to volunteer is a willing heart and a warm smile.
