We are a certifed Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and have also been designated by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association as a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery. Blue Distinction Centers provide a full range of bariatric surgical services, including inpatient care, post-operative care, follow-up and patient education. To achieve this designation, Blue Distinction Centers must demonstrate better outcomes, meet stringent quality criteria, and show consistency of care.

Experience
The medical director of the Institute for Surgical Weight Loss is Dr. Jeffrey Lord. He is a nationally recognized expert in the field of minimally invasive bariatric surgery and has advanced fellowship training. He also teaches other physicians how to perform bariatric surgery procedures. Dr. Lord provides comprehensive evaluation of patients to determine their candidacy for these life-changing procedures as well as extensive patient/family education to create a foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

Procedures
The bariatric surgeons at the Institute for Surgical Weight Loss can perform two types of weight loss surgery using small incisions. The first is laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, which involves a permanent rerouting of the digestive system that leaves patients with a small stomach pouch. The surgery creates a bypass that reroutes food around most of the small intestine.
The second newer approach performed at Sacred Heart is adjustable gastric banding. Using a laparoscope, the surgeon places an inflatable band around the stomach, creating a small upper pouch at the top, with restricted passage to the rest of the stomach. This pouch fills quickly and creates a feeling of fullness.

Support Group
The best preparation for surgery is through education. We advise everyone to talk to as many gastric bypass patients as possible and ask about their experiences.
Sacred Heart Institute for Surgical Weight Loss established a support group to provide a forum for pre-op and post-op lap band and gastric bypass patients to meet and discuss with other patients who may have gained insight through their personal experience.
The support group meetings are the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Greenhut Auditorium. The meeting is conducted by the Bariatric Clinic staff and there are frequent guest speakers. Everyone is welcome to attend even if Sacred Heart did not perform the original surgery.
