Initial Consultation

The purpose of the initial consultation is to determine if you are a candidate for bariatric surgery. Even if you meet the minimum weight requirements, we must consider other factors before we offer surgery.

The initial consultation includes a physical examination, history, and evaluation. Depending on patient age and medical condition, certain blood tests, an EKG, and X-rays may be ordered. The surgeon may request additional consultations from other specialists before making a final recommendation.

Additional consultations include the following multidisciplinary team members:

The Program Manager, a Registered Nurse, provides an overall understanding of the program and educates the potential candidate on pre- and post-operative issues to help the patient fully understand the surgery, and the life-long changes that result. The Program Manager acts as a liaison with the Multidisciplinary Team to assure quality of care.

The Dietitian educates pre- and post-operative dietary changes, discussing dietary changes such as protein supplements, vitamins and minerals, low-fat and low-carbohydrate diet, and diet advancement.

The Health Psychologist conducts a psychological evaluation prior to the surgery to assess motivation and expected level of compliance. This includes realistic expectations with respect to surgery, psychological readiness, and ability to carry out required post-operative lifestyle changes and acceptance of long-term follow-up requirements.

Your primary care doctor conducts a complete history and physical, evaluating for complicated medical conditions and assessing circumstances that might complicate the post-operative course or success of the operation. The team will discuss options with you following the evaluation.

The team will discuss options with the patient following the evaluation.
