Learn About Lap Band Procedure
In addition to the Gastric Bypass procedure, Sacred Heart Institute for Weight Loss Surgery, also offers a newer procedure known as adjustable gastric banding.
Through the use of a laparoscope, the surgeon places an inflatable band around the stomach. The band will create a small upper pouch at the top and restrict the passage of food to the rest of the stomach. As a patient eats, the pouch will fill quickly and creates a feeling of fullness therefore consuming less food and inducing weight loss.
The Lap band procedure does not require stomach cutting and stapling or gastrointestinal re-routing to bypass normal digestion.
During the procedure, the surgeon will make tiny incisions rather than a large incision and insert long-shafted instruments through “ports” to wrap the banding around the patient’s stomach. In addition, a narrow camera is usually passed through a port so the surgeon can view the operative site on a nearby video monitor.

[Viewer Discretion Advised]
Overall, the laparoscopic approach to the surgery has the advantages of reduced post-operative pain, shortened hospital stay, and quicker recovery. If for any reason binding needs to be removed, the stomach generally returns to its normal form.
