The Sacred Heart Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine in Pensacola provides the most advanced wound care therapy, to promote healing and speed recovery.
The Center is the only one in Northwest Florida accredited by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS). The UHMS is an international professional organization that establishes standards of excellence and quality for hyperbaric medicine programs. There are over 800 hyperbaric facilities in the United States. The Sacred Heart facility is one of only 75 facilities to receive full accreditation by the UHMS.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy provides 100 percent oxygen to patients under pressure, helping to heal damaged tissues, reduce swelling and improve circulation. The therapy increases the amount of dissolved oxygen in the blood, so more oxygen is delivered to injured tissue. In turn, this stimulates small blood vessel and skin growth and helps fight infection.
Why would someone need the Wound Center?
Some wounds are complicated and need special treatment. Individuals who have health issues such as diabetes and poor circulation are also at high risk for developing a wound that would need special treatment.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Under the direction of hyperbaric medicine director, Dr. John May, Sacred Heart offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy for persons with chronic wounds at the Sacred Heart Medical Park on Airport Boulevard in Pensacola. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is painless and is typically used to enhance the body’s natural healing process. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment is the intermittent breathing of 100 percent oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. The treatment must be administered in a specially constructed chamber. Our Wound Center use hyperbaric oxygen treatment in combination with aggressive local wound care and overall patient management to treat a variety of problem wounds where blood flow or local oxygen delivery is impaired.
While there are many uses for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Sacred Heart has focused its program primarily on:
- Patients with diabetes who have foot ulcers that will not heal
- Enhancement of healing in selected problem wounds
- Those who have tissue damage as a result of radiation therapy
- Those who suffer from chronic bone infections
- Persons with compromised skin grafts or flaps
